We have approximately 85 to 160 free range laying hens at any one time, so supply is limited. We
throw out cracked corn for them and also provide Oyster Shell, Cherry rock and Kelp free choice. We also provide
layer mash. This may not be organic but it is chemical and antibiotic free. This is on top of what they find free
ranging such as bugs, worms, grasses and of course treats from the garden!. Their water comes from artesian springs,
no chemicals there either. They are allowed to free range any day weather permitting. We use only home made compost
in the organically managed gardens. |
Ellson's Acre is
Just that an acre of farm fresh free range chickens, free ranged eggs and organically managed gardens. We have
organically grown vegetables available from mid June till frost in October. Because of our size, our chicken, eggs
and vegetables are sold on a person to person basis. We do not go to farmers markets. We are located just out side
of Des Moines Iowa. We are thinking about starting a CSA(community supported agriculture).

WE NO LONGER HAVE THE CHICKENS OR EGGS DUE TO HEALTH ISSUES, BUT WE
ARE LEAVING THE HOW TO INFO UP AND HOPE IT STILL HELPS MANY.chicken
Disclaimer: We are a State recognized
not certified organic grower in our gardens, this does not apply to our chickens. We do our very best to make sure
the flock is not exposed to any chemicals or hormones or antibiotics. (we eat these eggs and chickens to you know!)
That's how this got started in the first place!
Below are two pictures of how most commercial hens live their entire
lives.
These are pictures of where your store eggs come from. These birds spend their whole life like this.
